Backend Lead of Social Apps Company

Summary
As our Backend Lead, you’ll be responsible for leading the technical direction of our company and driving innovation across our products and services, and, for the first 6–12 months, focus on making our small backend team run as a high-output, well-organized machine - with clear planning, strong architecture, and smooth execution.
You’ll work closely with our CEO and product team to turn goals into technical plans, guide key architectural decisions, and keep our systems fast and reliable for millions of mobile users. Most of your work will be leadership, planning, and architecture - with some hands-on coding and code reviews when needed.
The ideal candidate should have a track record of success in leading teams, scaling mobile-first backends, and thrive in a fast-moving startup environment.
What You’ll Do
- Own and drive the company’s backend technical vision, architecture, and long-term scalability plans
- Translate product goals into clear technical roadmaps, sprint plans, and engineering priorities
- Take architectural decisions around performance, infrastructure, reliability, and scaling for millions of users
- Establish and improve engineering processes, code quality standards, and deployment pipelines
- Occasionally code reviewing and hands-on coding (for the first 6-12 months)
- Own key technical challenges such as performance bottlenecks, data flow, caching strategies, and infrastructure decisions
- Ensure API speed, uptime, data accuracy, and architectural consistency
- Design backend systems focused on scale, resilience, and fast iteration
- Implement security and privacy best practices so we can keep our users safe
